What is RUTF?

A peanut paste that saves lives

RUTF stands for Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food. It’s a fortified peanut paste made to treat children with severe acute malnutrition, the most dangerous form of hunger.

How it works

  • Packed with what a child needs: each packet combines peanut butter, milk, vitamins and minerals into about 500 calories of nutrition.
  • Treatment at home: RUTF needs no water, cooking or refrigeration, and it lasts two years on the shelf. Parents can treat their child at home instead of at a hospital far away.
  • About six weeks to recovery: a typical treatment is about three packets a day for six weeks.

Why it matters
Before RUTF, most malnourished children had to be treated with powdered milk formula in clinics, and fewer than 1 in 4 recovered. With RUTF at home, recovery rates rose to over 90%. Today it’s the standard treatment endorsed by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

Made in Georgia by Mana
Mana Nutrition makes RUTF in Georgia peanut country. Mana stands for “Mother-Administered Nutritive Aid”, because the treatment is given by a parent at home. Every jar of Good Spread you buy helps send Mana’s RUTF to a child who needs it.
